I love kicking off the week with a burger post and today I have something that is unique for my blog. After participating with Tampa Bay Bloggers on a Twitter chat last month featuring McDonald’s, I just had to try their two new Mac sandwiches as I can honestly say, I have not had a Big Mac in about 15 years. I often stop by the Golden Arches for coffee and Egg McMuffins to enjoy on my long commute to work and my kids still enjoy Happy Meals, but I myself have not had anything other than a basic hamburger there in ages.
I have fond memories of McDonald’s as a child. An uncle of mine was a GM for a store up in Spokane, Washington and my brother and I used to love to go there with him and enjoy Happy Meals, sundaes and boxes of cookies. We had quite a collection of McDonald’s novelties and I wish I still had them today as they would be collector’s items.
How many of you remember the famous jingle for the Big Mac? In case you forgot, here it is:
Boy does that bring back memories! When I saw that Tampa Bay Bloggers was hosting a Twitter chat featuring the two new Mac sandwiches, I wanted to participate and headed over to my neighborhood Golden Arches to try them, on separate days of course. As I am beginning a very special burger series on my blog, I thought it would be fun to revisit the iconic chain and include them in my burger series. Tampa Bay is one of the first regions to offer the two new Mac sandwiches which will be available across the nation in 2017.
On my first visit, I tried the Grand Mac which is a larger version of the classic Big Mac. This beauty is made with 60% more beef, thus yielding a 1/3 lb burger. It of course is dressed with shredded lettuce, the signature Big Mac sauce, cheese, onions and pickles on a sesame seed bun. It is a beast and requires two hands.
My son decided to sneak a bite of the Grand Mac while I was getting my drink. I was surprised that he liked it, because he is picky when it comes to sauces, but he really enjoyed it. When I finally got my burger back from him, it reminded me so much of the classic Big Mac that I have such fond memories of as a child. All that was missing was a vanilla shake but sadly, my metabolism does not like milkshakes as much as I do. A Diet Coke suited me just fine.
On our next visit, I tried the Mac Jr., which is a single patty Big Mac that is much easier to eat, especially if you are on the go. This one is the perfect size for me and apparently for my daughter as well.
Just like my son, my daughter took a bite of my sandwich while I was getting my drink. Boy do they have me figured out! My daughter really liked the Mac Jr. and has been asking to go back so she can order one for herself. She is growing up so fast!
One thing I love about all of the Big Mac sandwiches is that the buns are baked at Turano Bakery in Orlando. Unlike other fast food places, you can taste the freshness of the buns. I also enjoy the self-ordering kiosks that many of the stores are now featuring.
Have you tried any of the new Mac sandwiches? I would love to hear your thoughts. I am giving away a $20 Arch Card to a reader so you can try one of them. To enter, simply click on the link below. Good luck!
