I have been a busy bee with recent trips to Seattle, Washington and Amelia Island on the east coast of Florida. Needless to say, I have done my fair share of overindulging, especially while visiting the Pacific Northwest. My trip to Seattle was for the International Food Bloggers Conference and while I was there, I was introduced to Suja Juice and offered a three-day cleanse. Ecstatic, I accepted the offer, as I have always wanted to complete a cleanse. While doing research a few months ago, I kept hearing rave reviews about Suja and a few of my friends highly recommended their program. They have remained at the top of my list and one of the things I like best is that they are available for purchase at Whole Foods, which is one of my preferred markets. While attending a live blogging session sponsored by Amazon Grocery, I was treated to an introduction on the Suja cleanse as well as getting to taste two of their juices. After one sip of their Fuel which is made with fresh carrots, oranges, apples, pineapple and turmeric, I was hooked.
After 5 days of indulging in culinary bliss in Seattle, I was ready to begin my cleanse. A few days after I returned home, my package from Suja arrived and I promptly loaded my refrigerator with a three-day supply of organic deliciousness. I was set to begin my cleanse on Monday and could hardly wait. The three-day cleanse consists of 3 Glow, 3 Fuel, 3 Purify, 3 Fiji, 3 Green Supreme and 3 Vanilla Cloud*. The juices are to be enjoyed in order, so each day you drink one Glow, one Fuel, one Purify, one Fiji, one Green Supreme and then one Vanilla Cloud. You should allow two hours between juices and the last one, Vanilla Cloud, should be consumed about three hours before bed to ensure full digestion. Each bottle is:
- 16 oz
- USDA Certified Organic
- Non-GMO Project Verified
- Kosher certified
- Dairy-free, soy-free, gluten-free (*Vanilla Cloud contains honey)
During the cleanse it is essential to keep hydrated by drinking lots of water. I am proud to say that I stuck to the cleanse without cheating and will share my daily experience with you below.
The morning of my first day of the cleanse, I began with a cup of hot water and lemon which is recommended. As a habitual coffee drinker and self-proclaimed coffee addict, I knew it would be tough to give up my daily brew for three days but I was up for the challenge. About an hour after my cup of hot water and lemon, I eagerly opened my first bottle of “Glow” which is made with 2 apples, 6 celery stalks, ½ a cucumber, a handful of spinach, 3 collard leaves, 3 kale leaves and a sprig of mint. I loved the flavor and found it to be quite refreshing. I sipped on water until it was time for the next juice, which is “Fuel” and consists of 9 carrots, 1 orange, 1 apple, slice of pineapple, ½ a lemon and an inch of turmeric. Having already tried this particular one in Seattle, I had no problem guzzling this spectacular juice and really enjoyed every last drop.
The third juice of the day is “Purify” which I was a tad nervous about. Made with 7 carrots, 1 apple, 2 celery stalks, a ¼ of a cucumber, ½ a beet and ½ a lemon, I had read many reviews about this being the least favorite of the juices and the most difficult to drink. I opened the bottle and the scent of beets and cucumber filled the air. Now, do not get me wrong, I love beets but was worried that I would not like this particular juice. I took my first sip and hoped for the best. Surprisingly, it was delicious. I did not find the beets to be too overpowering and really enjoyed the flavor combination. I was excited to try the fourth juice of the day which is “Green Supreme.” Made with 2 apples, a bunch of kale and 1/2 a lemon, it is the perfect afternoon “pick-me-up” and will give you that burst of energy to hold you over until it is time for the next juice.
Depending on when you go to bed, the best time to consume the fifth juice of the day is about 5 pm. One of my favorites of the six, “Fiji” is made with 2 apples, 6 celery stalks, ½ of a cucumber, a handful of spinach, 3 collard greens, 3 kale leaves, a squeeze of lemon and a hint of ginger. Slightly sweet, it is just like biting into a Fiji apple. I found this to be the perfect dinner replacement and it miraculously held me over until the best and final juice of the day, “Vanilla Cloud.” Suja truly saves the best for last and Vanilla Cloud was by far my favorite of the six. Made with coconut, honey, almonds, acerola cherry, cinnamon, vanilla bean, nutmeg, camu camu, and filtered water, it reminds me a lot of “horchata” which is a traditional Mexican/South American beverage commonly made with rice, vanilla and cinnamon. After enjoying this sweet concoction, I felt nice and relaxed and drifted off to sleep to enjoy sweet dreams.
Ok, so I am sure you are wondering how someone who is obsessed with food could survive three days on a juice cleanse. I am not going to lie, it was tough but I was determined to make it through the three days without deviating from the plan. I documented my three days so I could share my experience with you.
I woke up a bit grumpy on this stifling hot and steamy Monday. It is highly recommended to prepare your body for the cleanse a couple of days in advance by eliminating coffee, alcohol, dairy, red meat, sugar, white flour and bread products. Did I do this? Heck no. Since the day before was my beloved football Sunday, I enjoyed beer and wings for lunch followed by shrimp tacos, chips with guacamole and wine for dinner. Sundays are my cheat days and I always make sure to indulge in my favorite football foods since I follow a slightly strict and healthy eating plan during the week. I considered it to be my last day of freedom before beginning my cleanse and was a very naughty girl. As a result, I woke up dehydrated with a slight headache. Since I could not have coffee, I sipped on hot water with lemon and then proceeded to guzzle a few bottles of water before I began with my first juice of the day. By the time I went into work at 4 pm, I had a severe caffeine headache which I had not experienced since I was pregnant with my daughter five years ago. I forgot how intense those headaches can be and was miserable all night. Since I had brought this on myself, I suffered the entire evening but never deviated from the cleanse. If extreme hunger strikes, you can allow yourself a serving of raw fruits and veggies, half an avocado, a plain baked sweet potato and broth-based soups. I ate a plain baked sweet potato which helped curb my hunger pains. Although I was miserable, I thoroughly enjoyed all of the juices and found them all to be quite tasty and filling. I went straight to bed when I got home from work so I would not have to think about being hungry. All in all, day one was rough but I made it.
I woke up feeling well rested and without a headache. My craving for my morning cup of coffee had seemed to disappear and I felt a renewed sense of energy that I had been missing for so long. I was beginning to realize why so many people go on a juice cleanse and felt better than I have in years. Thankfully I had a busy day ahead of me and would not have time to think about food. I consumed my juices on schedule and did not feel extremely hungry until about 4 pm, in which I allowed myself another baked sweet potato sprinkled with freshly grated cinnamon. I coasted through the rest of the day and did something I never do….I went to bed at 9:30 pm. All in all, day two was a success and much easier than day one. I felt more energetic and proud of what I was accomplishing.
After nine hours of blissful sleep, I woke up with more energy than I have had in years. I truly felt like a kid again and my mood was beyond incredible. It was almost as if my body was thanking me for not abusing it with spicy foods and caffeine. I enjoyed each juice and was even a tad bit sad that this was my last day of the cleanse. My pants felt looser and my skin was glowing. Nothing or nobody was going to get me down and I savored every moment of my final day of the cleanse.
So, would I do this again? Absolutely. I was beyond impressed with the results of the cleanse and am committed to doing this every quarter.
