Pete’s Place in South Tampa is one of my favorite dive bars. While I do not go as often as I would like, I was thrilled to learn that they had recently rolled out a menu of bar food classics that have been getting rave reviews from my friends. Today I popped in to grab some wings to go and was impressed by both their size and flavor. With a selection of flavors including Lemon Pepper, Medium, Hot, BBQ, Garlic and Hot Garlic Parmesan, I went with their two flavors that pay homage to the Gators and the Noles. While I am not a fan of either team (sorry, I am a Cali girl), I am a fan of wings that are unique and their names are what grabbed my attention.
First up are their Orange & Blue wings which are tossed in Buffalo sauce and then topped with fresh blue cheese crumbles. Perfectly sauced and fried to perfection, these are a wing lover’s dream. In all my weeks of eating wings, this was the first time I have seen the addition of blue cheese crumbles and I think it is brilliant.
Noles fans will love their Garnet & Gold wings which are tossed in a sauce that combines honey mustard, BBQ sauce and hot sauce. I love this flavor combination which reminds me of a Carolina sauce. Sweet and tangy, the Garnet & Gold wing sauce is perfect for those looking for a nice flavor blend without too much heat. In fact, the sauce was so good, I did not need any Blue Cheese or Ranch for dipping.
Pete’s Place also features bar food favorites such as burgers, grouper sandwiches, sweet potato fries and deep-fried fresh jalapeño chips. Their kitchen is open daily at noon. If you are looking for a casual, neighborhood bar, be sure to check out Pete’s Place.[?]
