Fiery Pomelo #SundaySupper

#SundaySupper, Cocktails, Recipes

I like it hot and my large collection of gourmet hot sauces has expanded to now include pepper infused honey. A few months ago I was visiting one of my favorite local shops, Bayshore Market, and discovered a line of infused honey from Briarwood Farm which has locations in North Carolina as well as Dunedin, FL. Intrigued, I took home two jars, one each of rosemary infused and habanero pepper infused honey. I use both in a variety of items, including cocktails. I have added the habanero pepper honey to enhance cocktails such as my Habanero Pineapple Margarita and today’s recipe which is called a Fiery Pomelo. “Pomelo” is spanish for grapefruit and I thought the name would be fitting for this sexy drink.

Like the words from the famous song, I certainly do “get by with a little help from my friends” and this recipe is a collaboration between myself and my friend Justin who is my favorite bartender in Tampa Bay. Justin never ceases to amaze me with his creativity and while visiting him at Anise Global Gastrobar in downtown Tampa to take pictures of some of his creations, I pulled out my jar of habanero honey from my purse and asked him to play with it. Needless to say, we had fun mixing and tasting and the result is this spicy concoction that will heat up your night as well as your palate.

In this recipe, we used Woodford Reserve Bourbon, which I love,  but you can use the bourbon of your choice.  I highly recommend getting some honey from Briarwood Farm either online or if you live in Tampa, you can pick some up at Bayshore Market which is located at 5025 Bayshore Boulevard, just south of Gandy.  I am quite obsessed with their honey and once you try some, you will fall in love.

Another enhancer to this cocktail is the garnish of the Luxardo Cherry. Available at fine liquor store stores, Luxardo Cherries are ideal for muddling and really take your cocktail to the next level. Their gorgeous dark color makes for a stunning garnish and their sweet flavor compliments the spice in cocktail.

Thanks for the tip in the honey source! My cabinet is empty right now so perfect timing. I didn’t realize Justin is available for private mixing sessions! I might have to stop by with something to stump him!

What a delightfully different cocktail. I don’t think I’ve ever had a drink with any heat, but I’d be willing to give it a try!!! It sounds terrific!
