Foie gras éclairs, curry caramel doughnuts and pickled strawberry shortcake with a savory biscuit, oh my! Sounds pretty amazing doesn’t it? Combining sweet and savory flavors is just a typical day in the life of Datz Dough’s shining star, Pastry Chef Alex Flannery. With years of experience in some of the country’s most creative kitchens, Chef Alex is a sweet addition to the Datz family. He began at the famous Henry Waugh Dessert Room at Tampa’s famous Bern’s Steakhouse where he learned the art of creating decadent masterpieces. I was delighted to know that he spent time at one of my favorite places in Park City, Utah, the Stein Erickson Lodge, where he honed his craft for working with chocolate under Executive Pastry Chef Raymond Lammers. I spent some time with Alex behind the scenes and was impressed with his creativity and passion for baking. Ever since I was a young girl, baking always appealed to me and I used to make everything from cookies and cakes to complex desserts and breads. After spending a few hours with Alex in Dough’s kitchen, he inspired me to dust off my Kitchen Aid and get back into baking. I enjoyed my time with Alex and got to know a little bit about the man behind Dough’s deliciousness.

A pastry chef that loves to listen to Led Zeppelin while in the kitchen is A-OK in my book. If you have not yet been by Dough, what in the heck are you waiting for? Hands down, the best doughnuts in Tampa Bay. Alex has created some incredible dishes and I am currently in love with his Peanut Butter-Sriracha Gelato. With a sweet beginning and a spicy finish, it is one of those things you just HAVE to taste.
Well, all this talk of Dough has taken over..I am headed there now for a Nutella Latte. Cheers![?]
