Ahhhhh, the Green Iguana. If there is one place in Tampa that has a special place in my heart, it’s the original Green Iguana which is located at 4029 South Westshore in Tampa. I’ve been going to “The Green” for years and this past December I met the love of my life there while having drinks with friends. ♥ That is a whole other story in itself so let me get back to the Green Iguana and the tasty wings at this classic, Tampa landmark.
With five locations in Tampa Bay, the Green Iguana first opened their doors at the location on South Westshore in 1990. This location is a neighborhood favorite and serves some of the best food and drinks in South Tampa. Locals flock to “The Green” to catch great local bands and mingle with friends. I have yet to go to “The Green” and not see anyone I know. Aside from South Tampa, there are locations in Brandon, Ybor, Carrollwood and the newest location at the Tampa International Airport. This past week I headed over to the South Tampa location to try their wings for the first time. After hearing raving reviews about their wing sauces, I headed over to satisfy my wing craving with my better half. With signature sauces like Sweet Caribbean, White BBQ, Jamaican Jerk, Island Chili BBQ, Citrus Chipotle BBQ, Mild, Hot and Volcano, I had a hard time deciding which one to try. I went with Island Chili BBQ and my handsome partner in crime went with Jamaican Jerk.
I tried the Jamaican Jerk first and was delighted with the incredible blend of herbs and spices. Over the last few months, I have tried several Jamaican Jerk flavors and most have been dry rubs, so this was a nice change since the sauce was nice and thick and perfectly coated the tender wings. It has a very distinct flavor and would go perfect with a nice cold beer. I had to stick with ice tea since I had to work later that evening.
Next I tasted the Island Chili BBQ and was beyond impressed. The sauce was the perfect blend of tropical and spicy and was so tasty I didn’t even want to dip my wings in blue cheese, which is rare for me since I am a blue cheese addict. I was also very happy with the quality and size of their wings. Big, plump and juicy, their wings are some of the best I have tried in my wing tasting adventures.
One thing I really like is that they serve their wings with both celery and carrot sticks, which I have not yet seen. I LOVE carrots and think they are a nice touch.
Aside from wings, they have an awesome menu with a wonderful variety of dishes with a tropical flair. On Mondays, they feature $5 burgers and they recently won for best burger in Tampa Bay at the Burger Showdown back in May. My favorite night to go to “The Green” is on Wednesday when they feature dollar drinks. To learn more about their weekly specials or to see a listing of entertainment, click here.
Thank you Green Iguana for giving me yet another reason to fall in love with Florida! I will be back to try more of your wing flavors. Cheers!
