There is something about Southern cuisine that just melts my heart. Since moving to Florida, I have grown very fond of this regional style of cooking and have enjoyed trying different Southern dishes during my travels. One place in South Tampa has really captured my heart as well as my taste buds. This place is none other than Wimauma located at 4205 South MacDill. I have dined at Wimauma several times and each meal leaves me in a blissful state of euphoria. Their innovative menu never ceases to amaze and every time I visit, I feel like I am at home. This past weekend, my daughter Gianna turned 4 and for her special day, I wanted to take her to dinner somewhere that would be memorable. Wimauma was the first place that came to mind.
My children and I met our friend Rebecca for dinner about 6 and we warmly greeted by a familiar face and one of my children’s favorite servers, Danica. She did a phenomenal job that evening and really took great care of us. My kids really adore her!
We started off with a small plate of Philly Cheese Steak Spring Rolls served with fresh coleslaw and a banana bbq dipping sauce. A Philly Cheese Steak Spring Roll? Genius! This was the second time I have tried this and it is outstanding. We enjoyed it so much that the table next to us ordered it as well. I really like the banana bbq dipping sauce and it gives this dish some extra kick.
For dinner, I went with the Bacon Crusted Mahi with Jalapeño Cheddar Spoonbread paired with a glass of Gerard Bertrand Cremant Brut. Delicious and comforting, every bite just melted in my mouth and the flavors were intoxicating. I rarely can finish an entire meal, but this dish did not stand a chance. No doubt I would order this again in a heartbeat.
I was excited to order dessert since Wimauma has one of the most innovative and tantalizing dessert menus in town. I ordered two desserts for us to share and they brought my daughter a Bacon-Chocolate Brownie with Butter Pecan Ice Cream for her birthday. The first dessert that caught my eye was the Salted Caramel Pie with Pretzel Crust, served with Chocolate Ganache and Basil Chantilly. A decadent combination of salty and sweet, this dessert is simply divine. I have always loved chocolate-covered pretzels and this dessert is a savory combination of those flavors with silky caramel and a luscious basil chantilly.
I also ordered the Grits Crème Brulee’, I mean, how could I not? This sounded too interesting not to order and it was even better than I expected. The grits gave the custard a creamy texture that was unbelievably delicious. The top was perfectly caramelized and each bite was a heavenly experience. My son tried it and liked it so much he keeps asking to go back. What can I say, my kids have excellent taste. I highly recommend this dessert if you dine at Wimauma.
We had such a fabulous dining experience and the kids and I are anxious to go back. From the awesome food to the impeccable service and cozy atmosphere, Wimauma is an asset to the Tampa dining scene. Thank you Wimauma for making my daughter’s birthday so special!
